The death occurred Monday morn. last of John A. EDWARDS, Sr., one
of the oldest residents of this city. Although he had been in poor
health for months past, his family had no thought of his being in any
weaker condition than usual in the last few weeks, when suddenly after
breakfast Monday morn. he expired sitting in his chair. If the weather
had not been unfavorable, he had it in his mind to attend the communion
services on the Sabbath at St. Paul's of which he had been an elder
for over fifty years. Deceased was born in Paisley, Scotland, 1st June
1808. He became a non-commissioned officer in the Royal Artillery and
was stationed at Limerick, Ireland for several years, which place he
left for Canada with his battery in 1834. On arriving at this side he
was stationed at St. Andrews and from there went to Halifax in 1839.
Returning to St. Andrews he was placed in charge of the fort at that
town. He came to Fredericton in 1845 and retired from the rank of color
sergeant in 1846 and from that date, until the removal of the Imperial
army troops, he filled the position of barracks sergeant. He was then
transferred to St. John, and after remaining there 12 months, returned
to this city, where he has since resided. In 1872 he was appointed
city treasurer, which position he held for 14 years. On his retirement
his public services were recognized by the presentation of an address
and gold headed cane. Mr. Edwards was a charter member of the St. John
encampment F.& A.M. He was married in St. John, 11th April 1844. His
wife survives him. He leaves three sons and three daughters. They are
R.H. EDWARDS, Halifax, N.S.; M.B. EDWARDS, St. John; J.A. EDWARDS,
proprietor of the Queen Hotel, Fredericton; Mrs. GREEN, Manchester,
England; and Mrs. G.W. HODGE and Miss I. EDWARDS, this city. The funeral
will take place Wednesday 2:30 o'clock. The remains will be taken to St.
Paul's Church where a memorial service will be held. The elders of St.
Paul's Church will act as pall bearers, the trustees will attend in a
body. Undertaker John G. Adams will be the funeral director.
