It seems fairly certain that Alexander must have had a first marriage, before marrying Mary Ann Cunningham. I have not (yet) found any evidence for such a marriage in the records in Shelburne. However, there is a baptism record for James, son of Alexr and Nancy McDonald, dated 11 Nov 1783, in the records of Christ Church Anglican, Shelburne.4

The 'first' (given) name of this man is unclear, and in fact an unambiguous answer probably does not exist. First, there is the early confusion in my records brought about by a family note indicating that my great-grandmother Margaret Ann's parents were Henry & Johanna. Since about 2004 I have come to accept that Margaret Ann's parents were actually Daniel & Elizabeth. Numerous census and other records from the Eastern Shore are consistent with Daniel. However, in October 2006 I looked at the Christ Church Anglican records in Shelburne and found that there was a marriage in April 1832 between Donald McDonald and Elizabeth Hadday.

On investigating the early usage of the names Daniel and Donald I found that there is a rather widespread opinion that the two names were used pretty much interchangeably. There are one or two dissenting voices. For example, "The Old Gaelic System of Personal Names", by A MacBain, p.279, says
Daniel: Hebrew 'God has judged': early Scots erroneously once
considered it to be the same as Donald
Donald, Don: Gaelic Domhnall = 'world mighty' or world ruler

However, the preponderance of evidence suggests that in practical terms, for mid-nineteenth century Nova Scotia, it is likely that no distinction was made between Donald and Daniel. Possibly, and this is just my own opinion/guess, Donald may have been used in somewhat more formal circumstances, while Daniel was the 'everyday' name.
Here is some further evidence to support this view. My family notes say that my great-grandmother Margaret Ann MacDonald had siblings Isabel (m. __??__ Stanley), John (m. Mary), Dan (m. __??__ Parker), James (m. Catherine Ann), and George. The three brothers Dan, James, and George all have three or more children listed (in the family note), and these families can quite readily be identified in census listings. Now compare with the baptisms recorded at Christ Church, Shelburne. Three children born to Daniel & Elizabeth McDonald: George Alexander (b. 23 Apr 1834), Isabella (b. 4 Nov 1840), and Mary Elizabeth (b. 4 Apr 1846); and three children born to Donald & Elizabeth McDonald: Margaret Ann (b. 26 Dec 1835), Donald (b. 23 Nov 1838), and Sarah Ellen (b. 22 May 1849). I think the son Donald (of father Donald) born in 1838 corresponds to the son Dan in the family note, and that George Alexander (father Daniel) born in 1834 corresponds to the son George in the family note. Also, very likely Isabella (father Daniel) born in 1840 is the Isabel of the family note. In all cases the ages from various sources are reasonably consistent.
A small table from the baptismal records at Christ Church, Shelburne for the children of Daniel & Elizabeth McDonald, may help:

NameChild OfBornIn Family Note?

DonaldDonald23 Nov 1838Y

This is probably not the last word on the subject!
