"Frederick Hartling, the son of Jacob and Susanna Catharine Hartling,was born in Lunenburg County on 4 November, 1780, probably at Oakland.He died in November, 1854, on Hartling's Island off Necum Teuch. On24 September, 1805 Frederick married Catharine Bourgongny. Theirchildren were: (list of children follows]."
"See information regarding the marriages of Frederick and GeorgeHartling in the paragraph concerning Peter Hartling. On 14 September,1819, Frederick and Catherine Hartling sold their land at Oakland toFrederick's brother, Leonard Hartling, for 470 pounds. The familyleft Oakland about 1820-22 and first settled at Ecum Secum. Theylater moved to Mitchell Bay. In 1826, Frederick Hartling petitionedthe government for a license of occupation for Long Island, Black DuckIsland, and Middle Island off the coast of Necum Teuch. The threeislands contained about seventy acres. Since most of the land wasbarren, only a small part was fit for cultivation. Frederick Hartlingstated that he had built a house upon one of the islands and hadsettled there with his family. He also stated that he had madeconsiderable improvement to the island. In 1839 he was granted sixtyacres of land at Black Duck Island and Long Island. In the Census of1827 Frederick Hartling is shown as having one cultivated acre. Heharvested two hundred and fifty bushels of potatoes and cut three tonsof hay. He kept two head of cattle, one pig, and ten sheep." .
