John Henry Fader
Father Charles Frederick Henry Fader (1793 - 1854)
Mother Catherine Barbara Schnare (1800 - 1882)
Five of the sons in this family, namely John Henry, Albert, Silas, Enoch, and Joseph, were involved in a business in the city of Halifax. The Fader Brothers victuallers (wholesale and retail) establishment was located variously on Dresden Row, Barrington Street, Argyle Street, Hollis Street (roughly during the period 1877-88) in downtown Halifax (I think the business actually began in 1864 but I do not have details from the early years). Not all of these five brothers were involved in the business during the entire period. The Halifax City Directory indicates John, Albert, and Silas as principals with Fader Bros. Victuallers at 64 Barrington Street in 1877-78; this is the first appearance of Fader Bros. in the Halifax City Directory.
In 1888 James A Leaman bought the store, then located at 6-14 Bedford Row, from the Fader brothers, changing the name to JA Leaman and Co., Ltd. After Fader Bros. was sold to James Leaman, Albert Fader opened an operation as a Fish Merchant further along the street, at 30 Bedford Row; this store was later to become Boutilier's Fish Market, remaining in existence till 1972.
James Leaman retreated from the business within two or three years, with my great-grandfather Robert Henry Edwards becoming the sole proprietor; for some reason the name JA Leaman & Co. Ltd, Est. 1888, was retained. This business remained in operation until 1962.1,2,3
